One of the best places to start when it comes to “going green” is to swap disposable products for reusable products. Not only is it better for the environment, it’s better for our bodies. Plastic is a known neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor (to put it simply, it’s harming our bodies.) Reusable products like glass, stainless steel and silicone are amazing non-toxic options.

With that being said, here’s our Whole Family Approved list of sustainable swaps to reduce waste.

1. Stainless Steel Water Bottles

These double wall insulated bottles keep liquids cold for 24 hours or hot for up to 12 hours. It comes with 2 lid options, and the wide mouth top makes it easy to add ice and also easy to clean.

Klean Kanteen
These 12oz stainless steel bottles are perfect for kids on the go. They are leak + spill proof and easy to clean.

2. Stasher Bags
We absolutely love these! They are food grade silicone, easy to clean, dishwasher safe, freezable, and perfect for on the go meals + snacks!

3. Beeswax Wrap
We ditched the plastic wrap and went for these beeswax wraps instead. They are super cute and easy to use. To clean, just rinse with soapy cold water, rinse and air dry.

4. Glass Food Storage
If we store our food in plastic containers, the plastic can leach into our food and cause a threat to our health. Leaching is especially bad if we microwave our food in the plastic ware. Opt for these glass food storage containers that are BPA free and leakproof.

5. Bamboo Toothbrushes
A product that we use everyday twice a day (in our mouths, I might add) should be safe and non toxic. Instead of conventional plastic, try these bamboo charcoal infused toothbrushes that make your teeth feel fresh and clean.

6. Eco-Friendly Feminine Products
So much waste is created using ordinary feminine products. The cancer causing chemicals and elements that make up typical pads and tampons are actually making our menstrual symptoms worse! Studies show that using non toxic or organic feminine products lower the intensity of abdominal / pelvic pain, reduce skin irritation and are also better for the environment.

If you’re into pads check these out:

If you’re more of a tampon lady, here’s my pick:

For those of you that want a reusable option, this menstrual cup will be your best friend.

7. Stainless Steel Straws
These are a fave in our family. Living by the beach, it’s so sad to see peoples’ plastic straws and other trash just laying around, knowing that these end up in the ocean and can harm sea life.

We love these straws for us parents:
…and these cute silicone top straws for our kiddos.
8. Wool Dryer Balls
Did you know that dryer sheets are one of the most toxic products you can have in your household? Their ingredients are linked to cancers, and can cause respiratory and nervous system disorders. No thanks! These dryer balls help dry the clothes faster, and BONUS- add a couple drops of essential oils to the dryer balls for fresh scented laundry without the toxins.

9. Mesh Produce Bags
Again, plastic is not your friend here. These reusable bags are an easy swap and takes a huge burden off the environment.

10. Reusable Grocery Bags
Keep your mesh produce bags and your reusable grocery bags in your car so you don’t forget when going to the store! These heavy duty, washable and reusable bags can hold a lot of groceries and are such a better choice over traditional plastic grocery bags. They also fold up and come with a small carrying bag.

And there you have it- our top 10 easy and sustainable swaps to reduce waste. With these small steps, we can keep our earth clean and make a better future for our children!
